Concussions - Downtown Vancouver

Concussions are the most common type of traumatic brain injury. They are caused by intensive impact or movement applied to the back, neck, or skull. Your brain is cushioned by cerebrospinal fluid, which protects it during any day-to-day movements. However, when hit with intense force, the brain can slide back and forth against the inner walls of your skull, causing damage to the brain tissue. This type of injury is very common in motor vehicle accidents. If you are coming to Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub for a motor-vehicle-related accident, please ask us about our ICBC Client Care Program.  Learn more about our unique PAARCC program here.

They may cause immediate, but temporary, loss of consciousness, memory loss, difficulties in concentration, headaches, issues with balance and coordination, and much more. At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, we understand just how difficult these symptoms can be. We have found that the best relief of these symptoms is through a multi-disciplinary approach. Our team of highly trained therapists comprises RMTs, physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and counselors. Using a combination of these treatment types, our dedicated therapists can provide you with fast, effective relief, all at the convenience of one clinic location.

What To Expect From Your First Session

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our physiotherapists do all that they can to avoid things that aggravate your symptoms: our tranquil environment helps with irritants like bright lights, loud noises, and strong smells. Our therapists also treat you lying down, which has an immediate effect on releasing built-up tension from your injuries.

Your sessions will take place in a private room with your therapist. This is not only to reduce any stimulation that might aggravate your symptoms, but also you are the therapist’s only priority during your session.

Your practitioner will work with you for the full appointment, and he or she keeps you in a supine position to reduce any strain on your head and neck muscles. Your practitioner will focus on stretching and releasing your injured muscles, while ensuring that you are comfortable. Because concussions are often accompanied by consistent pain and headaches, our therapists will also provide you with at-home techniques to help your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of a concussion?

After any impact to the head, concussion symptoms can begin immediately. Some common symptoms are the following:

  • Headaches or pressure in the head
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seeing “stars”
  • Ringing in ears
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
What should I avoid doing after a concussion?

Certain activities can exacerbate your concussion symptoms, or put you in a dangerous situation. Avoid any sort of rigorous physical activity that will raise your heart rate. Strenuous mental activity, such as reading, watching TV, playing video games, can also aggravate your symptoms. Driving or operating machinery should be avoided until cleared by your doctor.

How long does a concussion last?

The symptoms of concussions range from person to person, and depend on the severity of the concussion and the type of therapies used to treat the injury.

Is it okay to receive treatment (such as RMT, physiotherapy, acupuncture, chiro) after a concussion?

Yes! Manual therapy is highly beneficial in treating symptoms of concussions. This is because with every concussion, whiplash also occurs. Receiving treatment helps relieve tension in the head and neck, which can aid in alleviating concussion symptoms. Our therapists can also help you with any dizziness and balance issues by focusing on balance training.

Concussions can cause a big disruption to your life. Their symptoms cause memory loss, dizziness, fatigue, pain and so much more. At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, we understand just how difficult these symptoms can be and so, we tailor our visits to your needs. We have also found that the best forms of treatment come from a multi-disciplinary approach. Our therapists are trained in RMT, acupuncture, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, and counselling. With a combined treatment plan, you can get back to feeling your best, all in the convenience of one clinic!

I was dealing with a rare condition causing some facial paralysis. Christina Wong is so helpful and caring about her patients. She helped me understand the road to recovery, massage techniques and ways to activate my facial nerves and facial muscles and what to expect with the symptoms I felt as I healed. My condition made me anxious and I found that few people in medicine understand it fully. Thankfully I talked with Christina who specializes in facial muscular nerve retraining so I could relax and allow myself to heal without stress. God bless her.
