Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy - Vancouver
In Canada, pelvic floor dysfunction affects about 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men. These issues can materialize in many different forms including incontinence, bowel control, sexual pain or dysfunction, pelvic pain, lower back pain, tailbone pain, and pelvic organ prolapse. These issues can cause embarrassment and, as a result, are often left untreated.
With pelvic floor physiotherapy, these uncomfortable symptoms can often be easily corrected and managed. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a therapy that focuses on targeting your pelvic floor muscles, tissues and nerves in order to reduce pelvic floor dysfunction and get you back to feeling your best.
Our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists
Our Approach
At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our physiotherapists know the emotional and physical discomfort caused by pelvic floor issues. That is why our approach focuses not only on treating the symptoms but on finding the root cause of it.
We know that your pelvic floor muscles work with the rest of your body, and our treatments and guidance reflect this, so you can continue to engage in the activities you enjoy.
Pelvic floor dysfunction can be an uncomfortable topic, both emotionally and physically. However, it is common and often is easily treated and managed through specialized physiotherapy. At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our physiotherapists focus on not only treating your symptoms but getting to its root cause, so that you can go back to enjoying your daily activities.
What Can I Expect From My Session?
Your first session includes a detailed history and assessment of your posture and the mechanics of your pelvic floor muscles. A digital internal exam (vaginal or rectal) is performed to help determine the strength of these muscles.
Our therapists understand that this may be an uncomfortable process; to help minimize your discomfort, our physiotherapists take the time to communicate with you about any questions that you have in regards to the exam. Furthermore, our physiotherapists do not use any instruments for the internal exam.
From there, our physiotherapists provide a treatment plan that is specialized to you, with an emphasis on education and self-management. This involves exercises, posture correction, manual therapy, and acupuncture (if needed).
Frequently Asked Questions
Pelvic floor issues can go untreated because they are deemed to be normal. However, they can cause embarrassment and keep you from participating in activities that you enjoy. If you experience any of the following, your pelvic floor muscles may be to blame:
- Urination during exercise or sudden movements (sneezing, coughing, laughing)
- Pain during intercourse
- Erectile dysfunction
- Pain, pressure or heaviness in your pelvic region
- Inability to control bowel movements (constipation or incontinence)
Your physiotherapist will focus on educating you on your pelvic floor muscles and function and will teach you how to control your pelvic floor muscles through contraction and relaxation. They may also perform manual therapy and prescribe exercises and strengthening and stretching to help mobility and stimulate blood flow.
Yes, the internal exam is optional, but highly recommended for the best outcome. Your physiotherapist can discuss this with you further during your first appointment.

Christina Wong is so helpful and caring about her patients. She helped me understand the road to recovery, massage techniques and ways to activate my facial nerves and facial muscles and what to expect with the symptoms I felt as I healed. My condition made me anxious and I found that few people in medicine understand it fully. Thankfully I talked with Christina who specializes in facial muscular nerve retraining so I could relax and allow myself to heal without stress.
