If you’ve ever had back pain and are looking for relief, you’re not alone. Back pain is a broad term – it can occur anywhere from your upper back into your low back and pelvis. Causes include herniated discs, degenerative disk disease, sciatica, poor posture and so much more.

For back pain relief, we recommend the following:

Back pain is one of the most common conditions that people deal with, affecting anyone from children to elderly. It is a leading cause of disability worldwide and one of the most common reasons for missing school or work. In fact, back pain affects 80% of the global population at least once in their lifetime.

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our physiotherapists know just how debilitating back pain can be. That’s why our approach to back pain is unique: our physiotherapists are trained extensively in treating a variety of different conditions – spinal stenosis, shoulder impingements, lower and upper back conditions etc. – that cause back pain. As such, we aim not only to treat your symptoms of back pain, but to find the route cause of your condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is physiotherapy good for lower back pain?

Yes! Physiotherapy is probably one of the most effective treatments for back pain. Because our physiotherapists are experts in a wide-range of different conditions affecting the back, you are definitely in the right hands when you come in for treatment.

What exercises help with back pain?

This depends largely on where your back pain is located, and what is causing your conditions. However, some common moves that can help decrease low back pain are:

Back Pain Relief - Vancouver Downtown - Back Exercises

  • knee-to-chest stretches
  • seated lower back rotational stretches
  • supermans
  • cat-cow stretches
  • child’s pose
  • downward dog

For upper back (thoracic) pain, some exercise to help are the following:

  • puppy pose
  • eagle pose
  • side lateral stretch
  • upper trapezius stretch
How long does back pain take to recover?

Again, this depends largely on your condition. Generally speaking, with physiotherapy treatment, back pain can go away within 1-2 weeks. In certain instances, back pain may take longer to subside.

While most people want to stay in bed when their back is injured, slow and low-impact movement is a fundamental component of recovery when you have back pain.

Do I need a physio or chiropractor?

Whether you need a physiotherapist or a chiropractor depends on what is causing your back pain. While both are effective for treatment, physiotherapists deal primarily with muscular and soft tissue problems.

People with back pain often benefit from a combination of both physiotherapy and chiropractic care. Because Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub is part of a larger multidisciplinary clinic, our physiotherapist can work with a chiropractor in the same clinic location to ensure the best outcome for you.

When should I see a physiotherapist for back pain?

If you are experiencing back pain, we recommend that you see one of our physiotherapists as soon as possible. Especially if you are uncomfortable standing, sitting or lying down, getting physiotherapy for your back pain immediately means that you can get back to feeling better sooner.

Depending on the severity of your back pain, you may not be able to come in for an appointment. If this is the case, we do offer virtual physiotherapy to provide you immediate pain relief. Please click here to read about our TeleHealth physiotherapy services

Is physiotherapy covered under my insurance?

Yes! If you have extended health benefits, our physiotherapy sessions are covered. We always recommend that you check with your extended health plans to see the extent of your coverage. And, we offer direct billing, so you do not have to pay out of pocket.

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, we know how frustrating and difficult back pain can be for you. Our physiotherapists are experienced in treating a wide-range of conditions that cause back pain and their treatments reflect this. Using a combination of manual therapy, exercise prescription, IMS, acupuncture, pelvic floor physiotherapy and more, we provide you with an effective treatment plan to relieve your pain and prevent it from recurring, so that you can get back to – and stay – feeling your best!

I was dealing with a rare condition causing some facial paralysis. Christina Wong is so helpful and caring about her patients. She helped me understand the road to recovery, massage techniques and ways to activate my facial nerves and facial muscles and what to expect with the symptoms I felt as I healed. My condition made me anxious and I found that few people in medicine understand it fully. Thankfully I talked with Christina who specializes in facial muscular nerve retraining so I could relax and allow myself to heal without stress. God bless her.
