Whiplash - Downtown Vancouver

Share page to:

Whiplash is a term commonly used to describe head and neck pain following a substantial injury. It is caused by excessive force to the head or neck, causing your neck to move beyond its normal range of motion. This type of movement damages the ligaments, tendons, and muscles in your head, neck, and back. The causes of whiplash range from something as small as head-banging at concerts, to a sports injury, to falls, to motor-vehicle accidents. If you are coming to Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub for a motor-vehicle related accident, please asks us about our ICBC Client Care program. Learn more about our unique PAARCC program here.

What To Expect From Your First Session

During your first visit, you will meet your therapist in a private room. Because whiplash can cause symptoms such as sensitivity to light, sound, and overstimulation, we ensure that our rooms are adjusted to suit your needs. Your therapist will also focus on treating you in a supine or prone position to help alleviate any tension felt in your neck and head.

Your therapist will begin with an assessment to identify injuries within your neck and head muscles. Using manual therapy, your therapist will focus on easing tension and stiffness in your head, neck and back. In combination with manual therapy, our therapists will also treat your whiplash with active rehab and low-level laser as a means to reduce inflammation and promote recovery. Your therapists will also teach you how to strengthen and stretch these muscles, so that you can continue your recovery outside of the clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

Signs and symptoms of whiplash vary greatly among individuals. Some common indications of whiplash include:

  • Stiff or sore neck, arms, back, shoulders, with increasing soreness after movement
  • Concussions
  • Sensory disturbance in limbs
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Tinnitus
  • Balance problems
  • Mood fluctuations
  • Sleep disturbances
What happens if whiplash goes untreated?

Untreated whiplash can have serious side effects. Chronic pain and stiffness can develop from injured muscles, and symptoms can worsen. Untreated whiplash can also lead to degenerative disc disease, as well as spinal misalignment.

What is the most effective therapy for whiplash?

As every individual experiences the symptoms of whiplash differently, there is no specific manual therapy that is universally considered the best at treating whiplash. At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, we have found that individuals respond the best to a multi-disciplinary approach. That is why our practitioners combine massage therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and counseling to treat the symptoms felt by whiplash. Furthermore, our team is also trained in active rehab and low-level laser treatments, which, when combined, can greatly reduce the recovery time for whiplash.

How long does it take to recover from whiplash?

The time it takes for whiplash symptoms to dissipate ranges from individual to individual, and depends on the severity of your whiplash and the approach taken to rehabilitation. At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, we take a multi-disciplinary approach, which has proven to be very effective in decreasing the time it takes to recover from whiplash.

At Vancouver Physiotherapy Hub, our practitioners are highly experienced in treating whiplash. We understand just how much whiplash can disrupt your life and we know that each person experiences its effects differently. As a result, we adapt our treatments to suit you and your needs, while also combining different types of manual therapy, active rehab, and low-level laser to promote the quickest and most effective recovery. We find that a multi-disciplinary approach is the most effective form of treatment for whiplash. Our practitioners are trained in RMT, physiotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and counseling, and together they can provide you with fast, effective relief, at no inconvenience to you.

I was dealing with a rare condition causing some facial paralysis. Christina Wong is so helpful and caring about her patients. She helped me understand the road to recovery, massage techniques and ways to activate my facial nerves and facial muscles and what to expect with the symptoms I felt as I healed. My condition made me anxious and I found that few people in medicine understand it fully. Thankfully I talked with Christina who specializes in facial muscular nerve retraining so I could relax and allow myself to heal without stress. God bless her.
